AS YOU CAN SEE THERE IS STILL GREEN ON THE TREE BUT THIS IS WHAT CAUSED IT TO FALL 
YES THIS IS THE BASE OF THE TREE - IT HAS BEEN COMPROMISED BY TURPENTINE BEETLE.
So a tree can look healthy but really is not. As you can see this tree landed on the roof of the house. So not only did we remove the tree but our customer brought us into another phase of property maintenance - Construction. With Spring comes the possibility of the Winter Moth Caterpillar. If you saw the white moths flying around your lights in Nov-Dec that means they are probably in your area.
Trees hardest hit are Deciduous Trees or "Soft leaf Trees"
"Lichen" Cape Cod moss - it grows on rocks, and other inanimate objects plus trees. Bluish-green to gray paper thin plants - grow on the outside bark of the tree.
From different "Plant web sites" - Lichens are most often thought of as an indicator of poor tree vigor. Lichens need a certain amount of sunlight so if the tree is healthy and has dense foliage, lichens do not grow. It is very important that trees be maintained to insure maximum foliage.
